Ukraine Tries to Sober Up Its Bears for Euro Soccer - Businessweek

"Contemporary Vodka Bear" is a lousy name for a group, but it's a great phrase.

Ukraine Tries to Sober Up Its Bears for Euro Soccer - Businessweek: The provenance of the contemporary vodka bear is, in fact, unclear.

Rock Climber Alex Honnold Tackles Yosemite’s Biggest Rock Faces - NYTimes.com

My biggest accomplishment for the day was remembering most of the lyrics to "Come On Eileen".

Rock Climber Alex Honnold Tackles Yosemite’s Biggest Rock Faces - NYTimes.com: Honnold was attempting something no one had done before: climb the three biggest rock faces in the California park in succession, alone, and in less than 24 hours. Dubbed the triple, the task would mean scaling the sheer walls of Mount Watkins, El Capitan and Half Dome for a total of about 7,000 vertical feet of rock.

McOlympics? That’s fine with me | Rob Lyons | spiked

Yum, I might get some McDonald's for lunch now...

McOlympics? That’s fine with me | Rob Lyons | spiked: Essentially, doctors, nutritionists and commentators seem to believe that the mere sight of those McDonald’s ‘golden arches’ is enough to turn us into salivating hordes who won’t be satisfied till we are chomping down on a feast of saturated fat, with a side order of coronary-inducing confectionery and a super-sized portion of fizzy diabetes juice. In the fairytale world of health campaigners and liberal columnists, the masses are stupid, child-like drones being force-fed lethal products by heartless, malevolent corporations.

North Dakota Voters Consider Ending Property Tax - NYTimes.com

Property tax has always struck me as much less fair than income or sales taxes. I'd be all in favor of abolishing it completely, even if it means raising income and sales taxes to make up the revenue.

North Dakota Voters Consider Ending Property Tax - NYTimes.com: They argue that the tax is unpredictable, inconsistent, counter to the concept of property ownership and needless in a state that, thanks in part to wildly successful oil drilling, finds itself in the rare circumstance of carrying budget reserves.

Bug - Spellcheck

Yes!

(Violet loves for me to spell "pterodactyl", and I hate having to explain that there's no reason it begins with "p")

The sentence I excerpted below is the best sentence in a news article I've read in a long time.

Business - Derek Thompson - 3 Very Simple Reasons Why You Can't Get HBO Go, Exclusively - The Atlantic

I expect that this will change within the decade...

Business - Derek Thompson - 3 Very Simple Reasons Why You Can't Get HBO Go, Exclusively - The Atlantic: HBO has a message for the thousands of fans begging to pay for its online streaming service, HBO Go, exclusively. Thanks, but no thanks. We don't want your money. Even if you'll just pirate our expensive stuff, otherwise.

Magazine - The Escapist - The Atlantic

I was tickled to learn that, after I discovered the joys of reading Wodehouse, that he lived and was buried not ten miles from the house I grew up in on eastern Long Island. Magazine - The Escapist - The Atlantic: Wodehouse’s correspondence, which begins in 1899, before the death of Queen Victoria, and ends in 1975, just before his own death at age 93, conveys both the scope and the narrowness of his life. There need not be any contradiction here: Wodehouse wrote nearly 100 books over eight decades, while simultaneously engaging in one solid marriage, a limited number of friendships, and a private life consisting of reading, writing, and golf.

Food Trucks Add American Flavor to Paris - NYTimes.com

Great, there might be something cheap *and* good to eat next time we're in Paris!

Food Trucks Add American Flavor to Paris - NYTimes.com: In France, there is still a widespread belief that the daily diet in the United States consists of grossly large servings of fast food. But in Paris, American food is suddenly being seen as more than just restauration rapide. Among young Parisians, there is currently no greater praise for cuisine than “trรจs Brooklyn,” a term that signifies a particularly cool combination of informality, creativity and quality.

California Chefs Mount a Repeal of Foie Gras Ban Set for July 1 - NYTimes.com

Further down the slippery slope...

California Chefs Mount a Repeal of Foie Gras Ban Set for July 1 - NYTimes.com: With less than a month until California’s first-in-the nation ban on foie gras takes effect, fans of the fattened duck and goose liver are buying out stocks of the delicacy, searching for legal loopholes and sating themselves at a series of foie-heavy goodbyes.
