Cool!

It's not nearly enough for what's needed. And the yellow-cab people fighting this can bite my ass.

Livery Cabs Get New Hue for Pickups - WSJ.com: The iconic yellow New York City cab is getting a new twist, with officials Sunday unveiling the green "Boro Taxi"— a class of livery cab that will be sanctioned to pick up passengers off the streets in the outer boroughs and upper Manhattan.

My Parents are Nudists

My parents were decidedly *not* nudists. And we're sort of reluctant nudists, as our kids love playing in the bathroom while we shower.

My Parents are Nudists: In 6th grade, a new friend came over and saw both of my parents lounging naked in the backyard. This is when I found out my family was a little different than most.

Taking in a concert doubleheader with Creed and Nickelback, the world's most hated bands - Grantland

I don't particularly like Creed and Nickelback, but I don't really understand all the hate, either...

Taking in a concert doubleheader with Creed and Nickelback, the world's most hated bands - Grantland: But this is what I wanted to do: I wanted to see Creed at New York's intimate Beacon Theatre (performing their 1997 album My Own Prison in its entirety), followed by Nickelback in front of 18,000 people at Madison Square Garden.

Church of St-Etienne-du-Mont | A Bridge to Eternity | Masterpiece by H. George Fletcher - WSJ.com

Next time we're in Paris...

Church of St-Étienne-du-Mont | A Bridge to Eternity | Masterpiece by H. George Fletcher - WSJ.com: The neighboring church of St-Étienne-du-Mont, another vestige of the vanished Abbey of Sainte-Geneviève that once crowned the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, draws comparatively small attention. Few of those who contemplate its exterior intrude upon its peaceful, light-filled, flamboyant gothic interior. But they should.

Day after perfect game, Humber feels humbled by accolades | Mariners | The Seattle Times

We happened to have the Yankees-Red Sox game on when Fox cut to this game, so we saw the final inning, and it was way super cool. (Also cool was the Yankees going from losing 9-1 before Fox cut away, to losing only 9-8 when they cut back, on their way to a 15-9 win!)

Day after perfect game, Humber feels humbled by accolades | Mariners | The Seattle Times: "Just think, Philip," he said. "Yesterday, you were sitting here getting ready for the game. Today, you're going to have a display in the Hall of Fame."

Instagram, Kodak and the end of innovation | Norman Lewis | spiked

A bit of a grumpy article, but this is a good point...

Instagram, Kodak and the end of innovation | Norman Lewis | spiked: That a company with no revenues and one which plays upon nostalgia and self-absorbed consumption through images can attract $1 billion, while Kodak goes down the pan, is nothing to celebrate.

Things You Might Have Seen If Darth Vader Was A Good Father

Things You Might Have Seen If Darth Vader Was A Good Father: A longer time ago, in a galaxy further and further away, this might have happened.

Small children and favorite colors: Research into why colors are so important to kids’ identity. - Slate Magazine

Oh yeah, my 40-inch-old loves her some pink. Though she often presents us with a list of her favorite colors, and expects us to have our own list. Unfortunately, she doesn't like orange, though she knows she's expected to wear and like it when we visit Princeton!

Small children and favorite colors: Research into why colors are so important to kids’ identity. - Slate Magazine: When my older daughter was close to 4, in a ritual repeated by thousands of approximately 40-inch-high females across the country each day, she declared that her favorite color was pink.

Screw Tax-Deferred Savings Accounts, Just Give Me Socialism - Rhymes With Cars & Girls

We gave up on FSAs because the money we saved in taxes wasn't worth the hassle of trying to get our money reimbursed, and it wasn't worth the annual use-it-or-lose-it spending spree in December. Not to mention the idiocy of having your employer administer it. What a horrid way to set up a program that ostensibly is supposed to help.

(Warning: salty language follows...)

Screw Tax-Deferred Savings Accounts, Just Give Me Socialism - Rhymes With Cars & Girls: But allow me to seize the rare opportunity to criticize Republican ideas by saying that these sorts of ‘account’ ideas – all of them – suck. Essentially, in one way or another all of these ‘accounts’ boil down to having money garnished from your paycheck and then being forced to beg for it back using paperwork and bureaucracy-navigation, by documenting that you used the money for the government-approved activity (and/or having an insanely complicated tax form).

Kudu Magnets - Very Big Magnets

Unfortunately, this won't work on our stainless steel fridge...

Kudu Magnets: It’s difficult to approach fridge magnets in an imaginative way, but Kudu took the magnets one step forward and created designed magnetic panels that cover the whole fridge, and turn a common fridge to a work of art.

I never really thought about the decline of the action movie before. But it's true...

How the American Action Movie Went Kablooey - NYTimes.com: If you can’t get behind “Die Hard” as a great American movie, then I’d argue that you hate greatness, movies and America.
