What's amazing is that anyone even noticed!
Community Hatches 3-Year-Old Beetlejuice Easter Egg | Underwire | Wired.com: If there was any doubt that Community was one of the smartest half-hour comedies to ever air on network television, allow us to enter this into evidence: The show spent three years setting up a joke about Beetlejuice, and that joke was simply an Easter egg hidden amongst other already amazing gags.

A Conspiracy of Hogs: The McRib as Arbitrage | The Awl
I do like McRibs, but only for a limited time. McDonald's wisely pulls them from the market before people can get sick of them.
A Conspiracy of Hogs: The McRib as Arbitrage | The Awl: The McRib's unique aspects and impermanence, many of us believe, make it seem a likely candidate for being a sort of arbitrage strategy on McDonald's part. Calling a fast food sandwich an arbitrage strategy is perhaps a bit of a reach—but consider how massive the chain's market influence is, and it becomes a bit more reasonable.

Why You Should Be Drinking Cheap Wine - Slate Magazine
The average annual consumption in the USA is only around one bottle per month?? We are definitely outliers.
Why You Should Be Drinking Cheap Wine - Slate Magazine: If hints of cassis, subtle earthiness, and jammy notes don’t interest you, you are not a lesser person. Wine is not art. There’s no reason to believe that aligning your tastes with those of a self-appointed elite will enrich your life, or make you more insightful or sensitive. If wine critics want to spend lavishly on the wine they like, that’s great. Leave them to their fun. Be grateful that you can gain just as much pleasure, if not more, without bankrupting yourself.

Music | The Karaoke Quotient | A Formula For Determining The Best Karaoke Song Of All Time | Overthinking It
I'll be sure to bring the spreadsheet along next time we go karaoke-ing.
Music | The Karaoke Quotient | A Formula For Determining The Best Karaoke Song Of All Time | Overthinking It: We have an intuitive understanding of why some songs work and some don’t–too long, too repetitive, too hard to sing or rap–and that mostly serves us well. However, I wasn’t content with this. Surely there must be a way to advance beyond these vague ideas about karaoke song choice. If only there were some mathematical formula for determining karaoke song quality, then singers everywhere would have a consistent and reliable methodology for choosing songs well and avoiding the embarassment of stinking up the place with “Yellow Submarine.”

The Divine Right of Queen Bees | Overthinking It
More than I've ever thought about these two movies...
The Divine Right of Queen Bees | Overthinking It: We’ve all heard that history is written by the victors. Politics demand that whoever possesses power must be illustrated as a hero, while his or her rivals are painted as villainous threats to the established order. So how is history rewritten when the other side wins? Clueless and Mean Girls would have been the same story, if not for their different outcomes.

School Lunch Proposals Set Off a Dispute - NYTimes.com
So does this imply that the school lunch program is to blame making kids fat? We can address it by trusting parents to be able to feed their own kids. Our school simply didn't have a cafeteria; we all brown-bagged it (or lunch-boxed it) and nobody starved.
School Lunch Proposals Set Off a Dispute - NYTimes.com: A third of American children are obese or overweight, according to the government, and roughly 40 percent of the calories they eat are consumed in the school lunch period. Nutrition experts say if the nation wants to make progress on the obesity crisis among children, what they eat at lunchtime has to be addressed.

Making the Grade: Why the Cheapest Maple Syrup Tastes Best - Yoni Appelbaum - Life - The Atlantic
When Sue's parents still lived in Maine, her dad would go out in the woods every year and tap trees for syrup. But they're in Florida now. We ran out of his last batch years ago.
Making the Grade: Why the Cheapest Maple Syrup Tastes Best - Yoni Appelbaum - Life - The Atlantic: The market for maple syrup offers an odd inversion. The thin, pale fluid labeled Fancy or Grade A Light Amber commands the highest prices. It is the white bread of condiments, an inoffensive accompaniment to more flavorful fare. The robust, thick syrup marked Grade B fairly bursts with maple flavor, but sells at a significant discount. So why does the nominally inferior grade offer decidedly superior flavor?

Welcome To Unreader!
Google Reader used to provide a feed of items that you shared, as well as a feed of items that your friends shared. But Google got rid of those convenient and useful features in their ill-considered move to force people to share via Google+
But I thought of a workaround: I created this blog specifically to share items that I would have formerly shared in Reader. Mostly articles I find interesting and webcomics I find funny. Light on politics and light on my own personal stuff.
A "Blog This" bookmarklet (see the link below) lets me easily post any item to the blog. And anyone who's interested can subscribe to this blog's RSS feed and read it as before in Reader. Easy, right? And it should work at least until Google decides to fold Blogger into Google+ as well...
